Participants will be able to recognize how different laws define PII and apply that knowledge to different educational technologies.

Schools in Utah have several different privacy laws to concern themselves with (FERPA, COPPA, Student Data Protection Act). Before determining whether allowing teachers to use a new technology or service, we need to look at how each defines PII, and then determine what safeguards each law expects. More so, we can also determine how to adequately de-identify the data for use. We will look at several different technologies, including IoT and personal assistants, and run them through each law to be able to determine what each school's obligation is.
